[Express] Link to PDF strange results

Hi all, had a search and couldn’t find anything similar. I have a PDF file that I would like people to view in their browser. Problem is when I choose action and link to pdf all my other hyperlinks ie NAV all change to the PDF link I made thus rendering the site useless! Any ideas anyone.

Thanks.

BTW the PDF is graphical (image of a pdf icon).

There are 2 easy ways/actions of linking to PDFs (there are others)

1 Graphic Link to PDF - select an image. Item>Actions>Graphic Link to PDF then select your PDF in the action palette.

2 Link to PDF - Click inside an HTML container until you get a flashing cursor (it can be between words in a sentence) Insert>Action item>Link to PDF - and again select your PDF in the action palette.

Try either of these. If you use method 2 then you can style your text with the surrounding text just make sure you have a space either side of the action item. This method also allows you to type in the text you want to appear as the link (in the action palette).

Try either of those if that is not the way you have been doing it.

Hi Dave, thanks for a speedy reply. I have done it the first way. The thing is that when I publish or view in browser (local) all other links that I have already made go straight to the pdf too. Nav doesnt work anymore, external http links all default to the pdf location…

I have done a work around (I think) Put the PDF’s in resources folder and hyperlinked them from the pdf image file. This appears to be working OK.

Thanks again - Will

OK - if you have used method 1 then I suspect that you have your images set to combine. Essentially meaning that all of your images then get the PDF link because they become 1 image.

Post a link to your online page and we can confirm that.

Not a good idea - this may work locally but FW will not upload a file that you have manually placed in the Resources folder.

Dont mess with the contents of the FW Resources folder unless you are sure you know what you are doing. FW manages its contents for you.

If you want to use that method then there are actions that will do it for you such as Upload Extra Resources Upload Extra Resources - ActionsForge

The action will then manage the files for you and you can reliably link to the file on your server.

Heres the home page Dave:

Could you see if you get the PDF link OK.

It did work but if you look at http://www.greenmountprimary.co.uk/Resources/whitestrip1a1.gif

you will see that your whole page is just one graphic.

Change some of your items (the ones with text content) to HTML rather that graphic output and make sure that your important images (the PDF icon) is set Not to combine. With it selected look in the item inspector.

Right, have messed with the combine checkbox and am nearly there. In regards to the HTML text box, everytime I make one and place over my rounded rectangle with gradient boxes the HTML text box reveals the page background and not the graphic item with the master fill action on it. Is this normal?

Unfortunately there are limitations in Express which are not there in Pro.

One huge advantage of Pro is that you can layer items on your page - in much the same way you can use layers in many Graphics apps like Photoshop.

This does mean that there are certain things that are trickier to achieve with Express and not being an Express user I am not the best person to help you with this.

Sorry
