[Express] Mis-aligned page

I have created a new site using Freeway Express and one of my pages is slightly out of alignment horizontally with the others by a few px - which looks awkward.

I have tried all the fixes I can think of. I even re-created the whole site from scratch with a single Master and everything seemed OK until I adjusted the page lengths to match the content (not the width) and then the same problem recurred with this one page.

Any ideas how I can fix this? I am not a web-designer so non-technical explanations appreciated!

Thanks

Without seeing an example, it’s just a guess:

Your pages have different heights (lengths whatsoever).

One requires scrolling - others not.

For those, scrolling is required, the browser’s scrolling-bar aside shifting the page slightly (to the left).

Basically, there is nothing you can do - except of making all pages as tall to force scrolling for all of them. But please note: It’s a thing which is just for your own convenience cause you can’t really judge the billion of different browser situations and devices on this planet.

My two cents:

Get used to.

Cheers

Thanks. I am not sure this is this only problem as when I reduce the length of the offending page to less than other pages I still get the problem. However it made me think about trying to set the Master output to left aligned rather than centre and things seem to be ok. Certainly I did not have this problem with my old site using different software.

As Thomas noted, it’s hard (well, actually impossible) to say exactly without having a URL to the pages in question. However, it does sound like he’s spot-on. When you have center-aligned pages the alignment is balanced between the left and right edges of the content area of the browser window. If you’re running a slightly older version of the Mac OS then scrollbars appear when the page content is too tall for the current window height, and the available content width is reduced. That makes centered (and right-aligned) content shift slightly.

Assuming this is the root of the problem (I’d place bets that it is) then the only ways your other software could have avoided causing this is if all your pages were either short enough to not scroll or tall enough that they all scrolled. Oh, or if they were left-aligned, which is the default behaviour for web content.

BTW, recent versions of the Mac OS handle scrollbars very differently; the scroll bars only appear when the page is scrolled, and the width is calculated to the actual window edge rather than the scrollbar edge – so no shifting any more. However, other operating systems will have their own quirks and behaviours. The only way to avoid this happening with centered pages is to make them all have so much content that they have to scroll.

Reducing the height of the Freeway page doesn’t automatically clip what’s shown in the browser. If there are layered items below the bottom of the page in Freeway, the browser will still have to show them. If that means scrolling then…
