[Express] New Mac user - FW Express 4 or FR Express 4?

I’m a new Mac user and a newbie web designer on a tight budget. I can get either version (4 or 5) on Amazon and wonder if 5 is worth the extra money?

Also, I’m happy to find a user group and would love some newbie guidance and tutorials, if you’d all be so kind as to point me in the right direction to learning this software properly.

Thanks!

Definitely go for version 5! Absolutely.

There are numerous things that it has that version 4 doesn’t. Also,
the help you get here will be much more useful and comprehensive -
the vast majority of us are using version 5 (Express or Pro), in
particular those of us who tend to chip in with help when people ask.
So consider it a worthwhile investment!

As for newbie guidance, you may find the beginner’s guide I wrote for
my students to be of some use. It is an explanatory reference rather
than a workthrough; read and absorb.

It is written using Freeway Pro (version 5 of course), but it should
be mostly directly applicable to Freeway Express 5 too.

You may be on a tight budget but investment in Software and Hardware is critical to ensure a quality product.

You cannot expect clients to pay reasonable prices to someone that is using sub standard kit.

I am not saying that Express is sub standard rather I am saying that 5 Pro will allow you to do so much more and if you are trying to be competitive then you need all the help you can get.

So my advice would be to buy the best you can (afford or not) as investment now will save reinvestment later.

Actually, I’m a volunteer doing a couple of very simple websites for non-profit animal rescues, so, as a new learner I think Express will be good enough to start with to “get my feet wet,” but you are absolutely right about offering good quality to clients, paying or not, and I plan to upgrade if/when I get good enough at this to need to do more sophisicated sites and lucky (and good) enough to have someone offer to actually PAY me. Are a lot of the users on this list professional?

There are a good many professionals on this list, which is good for
you because they can help you with most queries quiet easily. They’ll
also make you feel right at home, because there are also many other
‘newbies’ and people like me, who use Freeway as a second string to
their main interest, all of whom ask questions from the basics upwards.

It’s a friendly crew, (if somewhat motley, some may say), who
encourage learning just what Freeway can do in making your web design
your own, rather than just following another’s template. Plus, there
are a few expert users that really know Freeway inside out, Express
and Pro.

Enjoy.

Thanks, all, for the warm welcome and to Keith for the Beginner’s Guide.

How can you handle the ecommerce end with Express? I’ll need to have forms (I assume Express can do that??) with PayPal links for registrations and donations.

Thanks!

It’s also worth considering the discounts Softpress offer non-profits
(as well as students, educators and seniors) and may well bring Pro
into your price bracket.
