[Express] Replace HeaderWeb - How

In an existing web site created in FWExpress, HOW can the master header REPLACED> Following tutorial 1 the blank page was selected INSTEAD of one of the templates. Then inserted an HTML box at the top of the page into which a graphic was placed. It works fine up to 750 page width, but at 900 pxls it is too narrow and cannot enlarge it. Choose to create a new one and replace it. But unable to find a reference in manuals or tutorials. HOw is that done without losing the other pages or having to create a new setup???

There are lots of ways to create the illusion of a flexible header image. If you could post a link to the page in question, we could help you pick one.

Each page in your document can have its own Master page if you want. Is that what you mean by a new setup? Editing a master page changes the elements that are on it on each page that the master has been applied to (within limits – there are specific ways that an element can detach from its master, and this is object-level, not page-level).

If you want to make a change that percolates out to all the other pages, make that change on the Master page. As you edit it, each instance page will get a little bullet in front of its name, indicating that the page has been altered and needs publishing.

But I would back up a bit, because I think you’re missing an important point. You say that “it works fine up to 750 width…” – realize that unlike print design, you don’t get to choose the size of your “paper”. Some poor slob with a RIM smartphone is going to be looking at this page in a vastly different world than I would on my iPhone or desktop browser. Your design needs to degrade gracefully, to look like you meant to make it that way, regardless of the size of the screen viewing it.

Thanks Walter… here’s web link
file:///Users/cary/Desktop/FreewayDocs/NewFW%20Site/Site%20Folder/index.html
Still building site so is only temporary text on welcome page
all others nothing. When I added color to the page and saw how color was outside header (left and right sides).

I planned and created the site at 750 pix wide but in the posted version (above) it’s 900 because it was recommended elsewhere in the forums. There is much I do not realize and all help is sincerely appreciated

My work with FW begun 26 days ago. Prior experience with Comcast, Homestead & Intuit software where creating the page is limited; so have much to learn

You’re going to have to upload this to a server before I can see it. That link will only work for someone sitting at your computer.

Here’s the comcast site that will eventually be recreated in
FW
http://home.comcast.net/~caman89/site/?/page/Choices/

The other site (above) is where I will test everything first before overwriting the comcast site.

Okay. This is really simple to fix. First, make your header image a GIF rather than a JPEG (look in the Output tab of the Image Inspector). This will make the type more clear and easy to read. JPEG is perfect for photographs, particularly of natural objects, but it is absolutely the hindmost for type or anything with sharp edges.

Next, use Freeway or Photoshop to make an image that is 118 px tall by 25 px wide and fill it with white. In Freeway, use Item / Export to save it as a GIF, and in Photoshop, use File / Save For Web to do the same. Back in Freeway, click on a blank part of your page so you don’t have anything selected, and in the Style tab of the Page Inspector, open up the Background segment. Choose the image you just made and assign it as the background image for your page. Set it to tile from left to right, and to align to the top of the page. This image will be behind your other header bar, so it will look as though your header goes all the way across the browser window, no matter what size that browser might be. (This is precisely how the layout is done at http://freewaytalk.net, by the way.)
