[Express] Site Up, Need Advice

I was able to get my site up (thanks guys n’ gals) but there’s a couple of things…

  1. The homepage isn’t the first page that loads but it should be. How do I fix that?

  2. Text. The text looks a bit jagged instead of smooth?

Text. The text looks a bit jagged instead of smooth?

1st - it is likely that your home page does not have the file name index.html - change that and it will be first. Look at the page that does load first - if it is named index.html then change it to something else before you change the ‘home’ page

2 Your text is likely Gif text (graphic text) on a coloured background. If so then you may need to change the anti- alias settings but you are best to use HTML text for body text anyway.

Post a link to your site online and we can check it out.

www.rlmprosthetics.com is the URL

I fixed the index issue…THANKS!!!

Also…in iWeb I was able to make shapes, color them, lower their opacity and use them as backing, behind text blurbs. I cannot figure out how to do that with freeweb?

First thing I will say is that your bg image at http://www.rlmprosthetics.com/Resources/rigidback.jpg - is huge! At over half a Mb it makes for a v slow page load

The one at http://www.rlmprosthetics.com/Resources/softre.jpg is even worse at nearly 0.8Mb

These are supposed to be background images and as such you can increase the compression dramatically to reduce the file size - these really should be less than 80k

Where you have graphic text over your background image you should also fine tune your anti-alias setting as you are getting the ‘halo’ effect.

Because your using a bg image FW is not ‘aware’ of the colours within it and is not getting the setting right. This page shows the effect of different AA settings http://www.deltadesign.co/odds/antialias.html

In the inspector (with your text container selected) look under the 3rd Tab, Graphic item. Next to the Anti-alias there is a drop down where you can choose different settings - in your case I would chooses a sandy colour to AA against.

But I would actually make all the body text HTML and then you wouldn’t have the issue and your site would be more SEO friendly because at the moment you have no content of any interest to Google.

You should also consider creating a navigation menu on your Master page so that your visitors dont have to use the Back button all the time.

Certainly in Pro you can make graphic items have opacity but I am not sure of the limitations of Express when it comes to this. Look under the Paintbrush icon in the inspector with your graphic item selected and then in the Background section.

Delta Dave…THANK YOU SO MUCH! Just to have a little bit of help makes SO much of a difference.

Last bit…in terms of getting my background images more loadable…how do I change that? I know they’re big images, but as I imported them I didn’t see any options for compression?

I’ve been reworking a bit of the AA to fine tune it all. Again THANK YOU.

Because they are bg images they remain unaltered by FW so any compression has to be done in your image editor of choice.

Preview will do this for you - open the file in preview and do a Save As to create a new version.

In the subsequent dialogue box/path to file etc - you will see a Quality slider down near the bottom with, below that, a file size indicator. I would be aiming for between 60 and 80k but try a few settings to check out the subsequent quality. You may be able to get it down a good bit lower. Remember to give the file a different name so that you retain the original if you have to go back to it.
