[Express] Text format weirdness

New user here . . seems that when I enter text either manually, by copy/paste, or by import, into a new HTML item there is what appears to be an extra space between lines. LOOKS like a double space, but it can’t be removed . . . Changing text settings (font, appearance, etc . . ) has no effect. everything looks double spaced!

The same issue does NOT exist with graphic items/text.
Suggestions appreciated . . .

In HTML text. a paragraph return gives you an extra line-space worth
of space between one paragraph and the next. You can change this
amount in Pro pretty easily, not sure how you would attack it in
Express.

If you want to have paragraphs of text that contain separate topics,
then you might want to skip the following suggestion. But if you are
laying out someone’s mailing address (for example) or have some other
logical reason for wanting two lines of text to smack into each other,
then you can use Shift-Return to enter a line-break rather than a
paragraph break.

A line-break does not introduce any extra space – but it’s important
to note – it does not actually end the paragraph, either. Visually
disabled people (and robots, like Google) actually care about this
difference, even though your visual design might not.

Thanks for the insight, it’s interesting, but doesn’t really seem to help in my situation. I’m trying to copy a list of titles onto a page. And it’s a really long list, which with the extra spacing becomes twice as long when I import it. If I have to enter this manually using ‘shift-return’ for each item I’ll be at it for weeks! I’m not sure any of these items need to be search-able, so should I use graphic text? Strangely, Copy/paste into a graphic item changes the font sizes and formatting every few entries, although the spacing is correct. I’d also like there to be COLUMNS of text, do I need separate items for each column?

This is where a text editor comes in handy - you can do a find and replace to change a return to a soft return in a document in seconds. BBEdit is my choice here but plenty others offer the same options.

You can have columns of text. There is an action CSS Columns but I dont think Express is supported and unfortunately only ‘Good’ browsers pay attention to it so you are probably best to stick to separate text boxes and use the Text Box Linking Tool to flow the text between them if it is available in Express.
