File naming?

Just a question…

Is there an actual and valid reason for Freeway not being able to create a file name of some length? I swear, each and every time I try to name a file or a folder, I am stopped by Freeway saying it can not handle that long a name.

Why can’t Freeway handle file and folder names in a usual manner? Why should it care and prevent me from using whatever names I want?

Freeway’s limit to naming a web page is way too short. I’ve never seen a limit like this before and I have to wonder why it is so restrictive. In order to battle this, I have to create a couple of folders and then nest the pages down in there. And the reasons that I can not do this in just one folder is because Freeway stops me from naming the folders as I please.

There has to be a reason for this short coming limitation and I am wondering why?

And I am truly thinking this does not have to be necessary with the program and it only needs slight altering to fix this problem.

Any ideas?

Quite honestly, I don’t know. It may be a holdover from the bad old days of System 8, or it may be because IIS (the built-by-trolls Web server from Microsoft) cannot properly deal with pathnames over 128 characters, but I agree – it’s an annoying limitation.

I do know why you can’t name things with dashes – it’s to work around problems with JavaScript dealing with that character as the minus operator. Which is fairly dumb also. I’m off to file some feature requests, and recommend you do the same.

Walter,

Thanks for the excellent reply!!!

Please explain. I have been making direct contact with Ian of Softpress since last Friday.

Yeah, that does not make much sense because on the net dashes are a separator so that searches can see separate words, which is why to create an URL string of keywords with dashes between those words.

Thing is, I am willing to bet this can be somewhat easily cured by the programmers. Like you said, the MS servers could only handle 128 characters, but that number is still far more than Freeway can handle now.

Thanks,

Robert

The problem with IIS is that the entire URL cannot be over 128
characters. Individual segments have to fit into that overall total.

That will work really well, but I was suggesting you simply go to the
Contact Us page on their site and post your suggestion there. That
sends it into the Softpress help system, which is really an overgrown
CRM application, and which can feed directly into their internal bug
system.

Walter,

Wow! to both replies!

128 total characters for an URL is pretty darn restrictive! Those servers can’t be in much use anymore, huh?

Sounds like a good bug and request system. Before I do that, I have to sit down and get it down exactly as to what to say.

Thanks,

Robert
