Fill a Shape?

Ian has it! Thanks! See image:

BUT, joining seems very finnicky. Set up an arc and a line segment, convert the arc to curve, using open arrow tool, attempt to join one end of the line to one end of the curve. MOST of the time the Join command is greyed out, but not always. There is a hidden, non-obvious ‘join’ rule somewhere. Suggestions?
Thanks
Ernie

It´s not when you “combine” all the converted elements in first place.

Your symbol is basically a rounded rectangle with a triangle and a rounded shape on the bottom.

Draw the rounded rectangle with the built in tool (press the U key). Then draw the other shapes with the Paths tool. Overlap the 2 shapes and go to Object>Paths>Unite to create a single object.

If you find the Paths tool difficult to use, click the points around the shape to create a rough outline. Then use the Point Selection tool to refine the outline.

When moving the Bezier handles, hold the Shift key down—this helps to create smoother curves.

To move one handle independently of the other (one side of the point), hold down the Option/Alt key whilst dragging the handle. Practice will explain these techniques better than words ever can.

Drawing closed paths with the Paths tool avoids most of the problems you described earlier.
