Flash alternatives

Hi Folks,

Is there an alternative to Adobe Flash, principally for making image slide shows / image presentation. Really not sure if I can justify the £500 for Adobe’s Flash.
I’ve used Slideshow pro as a plugin from Lightroom but as previous threads have noted this does not integrate with Freeway that well.

Both Mac or pc considered.

thanks,

seoras

SWF’n’Slde Pro does the job nicely and you just drop the finished
result into an HTML box and use the Flash Extras Action.

Thanks Colin,

I’m checking it out. A bit basic but then I’m just aiming for something simple.
It’s rather amazing that the designers of these programs can produce the most ghastly effects and results.

Its that ability to drop the swf file into freeway I’d like.

Still open to suggestions.

I totally agree with your first sentiment, Seoras - but don’t let that
put you off what you an achieve using the Vertical Moon applications
that include SWF’n’Slide Pro.

I’ve also used Wildform applications on a PC, with a current offering
including Flair (which I haven’t used) for converting PowerPoint
presentations to Flash.

Also on a PC (or courtesy of Parallels), I use StillMotion Pro, from http://www.imagematics.com

Whatever you choose, you just insert the .swf into an HTML box and use
the Flash Extras Action to keep it tidy or use the FLV Viewer Action
to insert an .flv file.

There’s a simple example of the first action here: http://www.crystalclearmemories.co.uk
. This is just a straight slideshow, but you can add controls in
SWF’n’Slde Pro, etc.

Colin,

Many thanks, I’m spoilt for choice now :-), very helpful information.

I hadn’t come across flair nor stillmotion during my searching. Flair in particular seems good, tutorials on their site which is nice.

Looks as if there’s room for a good (stylish) mac program, though I’ll still have another look at SWF’n’Slde.

Better go and kick start the pc.

regards,

seoras

Be sure you run any updates pending before you use IE/Win for anything. Bad bad medicine floating around out there…

Don’t forget Keynote in iWork exports to Flash as well.

I do wish that someone would convert Swish Max on PC to Mac. That program is a true gem for doing simple Flash animations. If only I had an Intel Mac to run that on. I’d install Windows just to use that for the countless projects I’ve ran across.

Any users of Swish Max found anything like Swish Max on Mac?

Hi Colin,

I’m still looking. I’ve never encountered so much ugliness, dodgy websites and what’s it with da music ! Doing my head in:-(

All I’m looking for is a nice clean stylish layout NOT something designed by an HR Giger whanabe. Is that so retro difficult.

Wildform / Flair haven’t sent me an access code as they require so still to try that one. Swish max or swish pix are a possibility but again yet to try.

Discovered that Irfanview (free software) which I had on my pc can produce slideshows though if I recall (it was late) not .swf format and rather limited. Interesting software besides.

Anyway the quest goes on and I’m sure a helpful thread.

best,

seoras

Don’t forget, Seoras, that if you want to display images in simple
sequence you can do plenty within FWPro itself, using, Target Hide/
Show Image, MooTool, Carousel and Gallery Actions. See the Softpress
Knowledgebase, Actions Forge, etc.

Here’s a very simple (and old) example of an image gallery: http://www.luhrfiltergb.com/applicationsgall.html

Just made with Target Hide/show Image, as it is now called. If I ever
update this I’ll use fades between the main pictures.

Does that add even more to your confusion?

Just thought I would add another option that I found in my generally fruitless search: http://www.flashnifties.com/flash_gallery.php
There’s also a Lightroom plugin version via the turning gate.
http://theturninggate.net/lightroom/ttg-flashnifties-gallery

Think I agree with you about looking at the Freeway alternatives also.

Hi Seoras, I’ve not dug too deep into it yet but I got a cheap (but genuine) copy of Live Motion off ebay … it runs OK on my iMac (Leopard) though, as I say I’ve not pushed it too hard yet but it only cost £10 and I bought a book and a training DVD for not much more !

I also can’t justify the cost of Flash and am able to use After effects for most stuff and am therefore trying to work out what I get Live Motion to do that I cannot achieve in after Effects.

Good luck Roger

I actually tried iWorks but got error messages when exporting to flash. Anybody has more experience with this option?

Seoras, that link you mentioned is really a nifty kind of a thing! Made by mac-users obviously as they used the mac interface in their explanation.
What is really cool, is that they have more helpful flash items that are easy to use in a cms environment. Customers dont have to make thumbnails but just upload their pictures to a folder and the pics are automatically published. Wow… cool…

Easy to change the look as well. Thanks for sharing this link.
