Flash in Freeway

Don’t get all excited too soon! This was just anounced today as an option for app designer who want to include Flash output in their apps. Perhaps Softpress reads the news as well?

The Flash Extras Action has done this since Freeway 2 was in short
pants:

New options in the 2.0 release allow developers to set background
color, to specify scaling when playing a Flash movie, set vertical
and horizontal movie alignment, and set root level variables to pass
to Flash player.

Where is this Flash Extras Action? It’s not on actionsforge.com or on the
Softpress site. I don’t get it. I found a previous freewaytalk message where
someone else couldn’t find it either.

It’s built into Freeway, you don’t need to add it. Select a Graphics
box or an HTML box containing a Flash movie, and select Item /
Actions / Flash Extras from the main menu.

Right, I see that in the user guide now. But, I can’t figure out how to get
the Flash Extras in the FW document. I inserted the FLV Player and used
those settings, but I can’t get any Flash Extras. I want to scale the movie
to the size of the FLV Player box.
I don’t understand why FW reduces the viewing size of the video and also
seems to me to reduce the quality a little. The file size is the same,
though. I put a sample together where the top video is the FW uploaded video
and the bottom video is using a markup with a third party flv player. That’s
the way it should look (bottom video), but the FW video is smaller.

A second point about the FW FLV Player action: I wish this action would work
by also letting us select a flash file that is already on the server,
putting in an actual URL instead of just pointing to the file on our hard
drives. It seems like FW wants to reload the video whenever I make a change
to the page, and that could take a good amount of time, depending on the
size of the video, in this case 46MB.

This is true of any content on your page, you just don’t notice it
when it’s a 300-byte GIF. Each time you change the layout of your page
– even by one pixel – Freeway does the safe thing and throws out the
entire page and all associated resources and generates the whole thing
over again, so as not to ever miss a trick with respect to making your
page as efficient and browser-proof as possible.

What are your traffic statistics like for this file? Are you able to
see in your hosting providers’ server logs how many of these hits are
complete? If you’re looking at the raw logs, you want to find any hits
that include this filename, then look at the last two columns –
status and size – to see if it downloaded entirely. You want to see a
status of 200 and a file size of 48234496 or thereabouts (46MB in
bytes). If you see a bunch of 200’s with significantly lower file
sizes, then you see people who have bailed after watching a little bit
of it.

And I would seriously consider breaking this up into several smaller
files, aiming for a total file size of 5MB or so, kind of like YouTube
does, and pile on the compression to get there, too. If people want to
see it in full HD, aim them at a download site like S3 where you stash
a full-screen HD file in QuickTime H.246. Then it’s “off your books”
and you only ever have to upload it once.

Is the Flash Extras still there or has it been superseded by FLV Player? I’m using Freeway Pro 5.4.2 and I can’t see the Flash Extras in the Actions menu whatever I do.

You need to place a swf on your page first - then select It Item>Actions>Flash Extras

Below Transition FX and above Target Show/Hide Layer

Now I understand. This is for Flash animations (.swf files), not Flash movies (.flv files)
