FontSquirrel Fonts not recognized by FW

There’s a similar problem with Microsoft’s font Tahoma which Freeway doesn’t recognise.

The linked screengrab shows Freeway’s list of fonts (left) and TextEdit/OSX Font Panel (right). The ‘No problems were found…’ snippet is from Font Book.

Tahoma is a good, highly legible typeface which is on every PC, so it’s a shame that Freeway doesn’t recognise it.

@Thomas - Be weary that although you purchased a font it doesn’t mean that you can use it for everything. I have fonts on my system I can only use personally and not for commercial use. Not every font purchase grants you a license to ‘use in a web format.’

One of the things that I ran into was a problem if you’re using 10.6.4+ with Apple Font Protection. Yeah, I know. It sounds made up but this was an issue for me on 10.6.4 and working with fonts. Here is an Apple Support thread about it:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2462614&tstart=15

Once I did the steps at the way bottom then things started working better. Perhaps in 10.6.5 there will be a fix or the font manager developers will find a way to auto-disable it.

Just want to have you to sleep better with advices in your screencasts  I know, that recommending things could be a boomerang cause people once will say: “But Dan told me to …”.

Indeed - yes. I work on 10.6.4. But I see the “workaround” not that dreamendous bad, to let me step in deeper apple philosophies - but always good to know - and many thanks for sharing.

Now actually one thing makes me deeper thoughts:

Why is my Freeway-Copy crashing when I click “new font-set” and what can I do to fix this.

Hi Thomas,

The best thing to do when you experience a crash is to contact our support team.

Hi Joe,

yes - I agree. But I wondered what I should tell them?

I fixed it by deleting the Freeway Preferences in my Library.

Now it works as expected

As a Type Designer / Font Manufacturer using Freeway I’ve been interested in this discussion.

PERMISSIONS
What may have an effect on whether a font will display or not could depend on its ‘mode of permission’. When manufacturers build fonts, they can embed one of 4 modes of access permission. Tahoma (Mac) has an embedded permission ‘Editing’ mode (editing of the document is allowed). It’s possible that only the permission ‘Installable’ mode (everything is allowed) permits the font to display correctly?

Our FAQ on the topic explains further… http://www.clubtype.co.uk/fonts/sas/modes.html
Tahoma is copyright Microsoft, so read the EULA of the Operating System which installed it to discover whether it can be used in such a way.

In any case Verdana (also Microsoft) which is virtually indistinguishable from Tahoma is a ‘core font’ installed in all Win/Mac OSs. As such it has a permission of "Installable’ so everything is allowed. Core fonts can be downloaded free here… http://web.nickshanks.com/fonts/microsoft-core-web-fonts

COPYRIGHT
Fonts are software programs too!
Fonts can only be used on the web if specifically stated in the End User Licence Agreement (EULA). No matter whether a font has been downloaded free, or purchased, always read the EULA, it is the Users legal obligation to be aware of their rights. There is no excuse in Law for not doing so.
