Forum Migration

For the last 5 years my client has used an outdated vernon of Simple Machines Forum… they have at times received loads of spam into the posts.

I want to move them to Vanilla Forums as I have heard (outside and on FWTalk) that it’s pretty elegant.

Has anyone migrated from another forum to Vanilla?

I moved the Freeway forums from PHPBB to this system, which isn’t Vanilla (but which I had the benefit of having written). I do have some direct experience in making that scale of a leap. In my limited experience, Vanilla is extremely well-written and a good candidate for this sort of abuse. Your chores will be almost entirely limited to SQL – translating one schema to another, and applying that translation to all of the records. (I am assuming that you want to preserve the history of the previous forum, right?)

Yes I do want to preserve it.

I have found that vanilla have an app that once installed on the server, will export from SMF and then you and import into Vanilla.

At the moment there’s an error being thrown up about the admin username and password Im using for the old forum not being correct. But it is.

I will have to badger the Vanilla team as there may have been an error with the export.
