Freeway 5.3.1 - Remote Resources Action

I just downloaded and installed the Remote Resources action from freewayactions.com. I checked and it is installed.

I have a folder where I keep my email templates, and need remote links since they will be used in email.

So in the Site Pane, I highlighted my email folder, then chose Page > Folder Actions > Remote Resources. I then opened the Actions Pallete and saw the Remote Resources action tab. I have “Activate” checked and I entered the directory of my remote resources folder, starting with http://.

I publish, then upload, but I still see the “”…/…/…/" path in the page code. If I load this page, it doesn’t point to the address I included in the Remote Resoures URL action.

Any ideas? I’m gonna try and make a test page. The pages I’m using are 4.01 Strict.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bryan

This is strange. The Remote Resources action will not work on my current site (designed with Freeway 5 Pro). I can create a new site and it works like a charm. I also noticed that in my old site, my site is located in a folder within the main folder called “Site Folder.”. If I create a new site, this “Site Folder” isn’t created as a sub folder, the folder is simply called the name of the parent folder. Maybe this is a reason why Remote Resources isn’t working?

So yeah, I can get Remote Resources to work with any folders I create for a new site, but not my old one.

Baffled…

I believe that Remote Resources action is used for accessing files that are stored remotely on a server, not locally. So to do what you are attempting you will first have to ftp your templates to a server folder, then put the path to that server folder in the Remote Resources action.

If you want to upload these templates as part of your site, use the Upload Stuff action instead.

Hi Chuck. I have my website uploaded to the remote server. I created a test page that used the same images as located in that Resources folder, and that worked.

This is even more strange…

So I created a new site. I copy/pasted my old page into the new site. Then published. All images were copied to my new local resources folder. I then applied the Remote Resources action to my new site, which points to my remote location, and it worked. So there is something wrong with my original site. I don’t know what, but I’m gonna copy over my files to site I just created and upload. I’ll keep my original site just in case I have to upload.

So at least I got it working, but I may have to do a bit of copying/pasting.

Sorry, that’s a bit confusing, but it sounds like you somehow you set your path to “site folder” inside another “site folder”. If that is true, don’t do that. Check your Document Setup settings again. More than likely this is causing your problem.

LOL Sorry Chuck… reading it sounds confusing to me too! Anyway, I did what you said, and I had it set as another folder. I was able to change to the parent folder (not a sub-folder) and it looks like all the files were properly updated. This is gonna save me time, as I was about to start copying/pasting pages… yikes! I will keep a zip of the original folder, but I’ll try to get this to work.

I’ll post back with results shortly.

Thanx again,
Bryan

wow… i just spent sooo much time trying to get the Remote Resources to work. It seems it only works for pages in my root folder. If I try to use Remote Resources action on any sub-folders, even one deep, it simply gives me the local path. However, if I make use the action with my root folder, my home page will show the remote links, and not local.

If anyone has any extra time… sighs could you try this for me and see if you get it to work. Create a brand spanking new site. create a home page and drop an image. Then create one sub folder, and create a page there. drop an image on that page. Then try to use the remote resources action on that image. You can just type http://www.yahoo.com in the field. If you get a broken link on that page, you know it works.

Then try using the remote resources on the home page (root folder), if you type yahoo, you’ll see the broken link, pointing to the remote server.

I’ve tried everything but to no avail. I have pages nested in sub-folders I need to use remote addresses with for email. I guess I’ll just have to find/replace using Coda then upload.

Still looking for help…

Thanks,
Bryan

Exhausted all my options… yes I’m still trying. I can get the Remote Resources action to work on pages in the root folder. Any sub-folders will not respect the action (I am putting the action on the sub-folder I wanted to use).

My workaround now. I saved my 5 email page templates in a folder, and when I do an upload, I simply drag those files on my remote server. It’s an extra step, but until I can figure out why only the root folder files work, it’s all I’ve got.

Update!!! Tim from freewayactions.com helped me out. Seems the old version had some problems. He sent me on a new one he’s working on, and I now can use the Remote Resources action in sub-folders or any other files/folders for that matter.

Tim was great. We went back and forth about 5 times and he solved me issues.

This action saved me a tedious process of updating my email files with absolute links.

Apologies for coming in late on this thread. My mail seems to have somehow
missed a whole bunch of posts made to the forum. Time for me to give my mail
server a kick!
Thanks to Bryan for alerting me to the issue of his problems with the action.
Version 2.02 is now available from the FreewayActions.com site at;
http://www.freewayactions.com/product.php?id=013
It fixes the issue of attaching the action to sub-folders as well as what I
think may be a bug in the actions API which manifested itself as a missing end
html tag.
The action works with Freeway Pro and Express versions 4 and 5.
All the best,
Tim.
