Freeway crashes when publishing

Odd thing happening…

I did some editing to this site about a week ago, saved it, published and uploaded - no problems. I turned off the computer and was away for five days.

Starting up the machine Freeway Pro (5.5) crashes when it is trying to publish the same site (without any changes to the site or the computer!!) It warns me that it is going to overwrite HTML files belonging to another site… and then crash!

What is going on?? I desperately needs to get this back up again today!! Anyone??

HELP!

Crashes while publishing are overwhelmingly caused by corrupted artwork or fonts. You can narrow this down by following the following steps.

First, get rid of the “overwrite another site” warning by changing the site folder (on your Mac) where you publish the site. Freeway has gotten confused, and does not recognize the site it published. That’s okay, because the site folder on your Mac is just a “cache” so you don’t have to publish everything, only the things that have changed. In the File / Site Preferences dialog, click on the Site Folder button, and choose or create a new folder. This can be anywhere on your Mac.

Next, check into the images and other external resources you have used on your site. Open the Edit / Resources dialog, and click Resample All at the bottom of the dialog. If this succeeds, then you have a much greater chance of the site being okay from now on. If it fails, you at least know where to start looking: return to the dialog (after you restart Freeway) and instead of using Resample All, click the resample button on each image until you find the one that goes boom. Return to that, locate the image on the page, and delete it from the page. Then try publishing again. Most times that will do the trick.

If it comes down to fonts, then you will need to hunt and peck through the fonts you have used, either in FontBook or whichever third-party font manager you use, and disable them half at a time until you find the one that is causing you grief. If it comes to this, I’ll dig out my description of a bubble sort for you, which is a very fast way to find a problem like this.

Thanks Walter,

I tried locating the problem and I am stuck. It has been some time since I built this particular site so I would not be surprised if I am doing something wrong… I just can’t remember what that would be.

I have located that the problem is on page nytt.html If I delete that page everything works well.
Last time I worked on the site I updated that page quite extensively. I published and uploaded and everything worked fine. Now I tried updating another page on the same site but it crashes all the time.

If I remove all the new images on the page (nytt.html) the site will publish. I can’t find anything wrong with the those images…!

I have not touched any fonts for weeks, and only standard fonts are used on the site anyway.

Why not try upgrading to the latest version of Freeway before asking for help! The developers need everyone to keep their software up to date, but especially if you expect any help!

Try this trick then: In the left-hand panel, click once on the trouble page’s title, so it highlights. From the main menu, choose Edit / Copy. Now open a new Freeway document, and paste. The entire page and all its contents will come over to the new site. See if you can publish that new site without crashing. Then, in the original site, delete that troubled page (or just the images on it) and publish once. Then copy the images back, one at a time, from the second site, and publish after each one. If you find that only one of them causes the crash, then look for a different copy of the original image somewhere. Replace it, in other words.

Thanks for the suggestion Walter

Meanwhile I have discovered that the problem is linked to the fading slideshow action. On the page in question (nytt.html) that action is used on all the bike images. I added 10 new bikes, and with single images for each new bike all works fine, but when I apply that fading slide show action to any of those recent additions the site crashes when I try to publish. The weird part is that the action is working fine with all the other bikes on the same page! I have looked through everything in detail and I cannot make any sense of it… Nothing has changed in my system (that I know of).
Can the action become corrupt by itself, and still work fine on some items??

It’s not likely. Images can crash Freeway, I have never known Actions to do that. (Actions can put themselves into an infinite loop, but I believe the application will stop the madness after two minutes or so of spinning.) It’s important to get the terminology correct here, though. A crash means that Mac OS puts up a dialog saying "The application Freeway Pro unexpectedly quit … ". Is that what is happening to you?

Yes, you got it right. Very strange. Images work fine but when I had the action to one of them even and try to publish FW crashes, and OSX reports. If then remove the action from that image, it will publish fine. Even though the same action is used on several other images on the same page…

I scratch my head and cry out for help. Thank you so much for looking!!
