Freeway Pro 7 fails to open when offline

I wish to work when offline, but I cannot open the program unless online. Is it possible to design offline? It crashes as soon as it tries to open. “Freeway Pro quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.”

Hi Catherine,

Freeway 7 works offline for me (tested in macOS 10.14).

I can think of two situations when it might need to be online:

  1. If you have not entered your serial number, it’s possible that Freeway needs to be online for serial number checking.
  2. It’s possible that some Freeway Actions need an internet connection, although I don’t know if this is actually the case.

If you’ve already entered a serial number, try starting Freeway while holding down the Shift key. This should prevent it from opening any document windows. Then see if you can open a new document (File > New). If that works, try opening existing documents. This may help to show if the problem is related to a particular document.

What version of macOS are you using?

Thanks for your ideas. Version 10.14.6 I will check as you suggest. I do view the site offline (opening file/index in web browser) which suggests to me that any actions do not need to be online to function.

I am not aware of any Actions that require an internet connection directly, but many of them create links to CDN (Content Delivery Network) URLs for the JavaScript files that they reference within your site’s pages. Those would be referenced by a browser when opening a page, but certainly would not have that effect on Freeway itself (since it is not a browser).

In any case, they couldn’t stop Freeway from opening, as there is nothing in the API to let an Action do that. The very most they could do is throw an error, and that, only during the publish process.

Walter

After opening a couple of old documents, it is now opening the current one while online. So that’s a relief. Not sure I feel like trying offline again if it’s going to prevent me opening it altogether. Thanks for your input.

Now it won’t open my current website when I am online. I can open a new document though. Not sure about the serial number, or whether that’s relevant if it seems document-specific. I’ll try opening a different website.

I think the last two messages are in reverse order: we moderate messages from new forum users, and that’s the order I approved them rather than the order they were sent.

Something else that might be worth checking: what is the size of the Freeway document? Freeway has problems with documents that are 2GB or larger.

If your document is approaching 2GB in size, you may be able to shrink it by going to the Edit Resources dialog and clicking on Resample All. Make a backup (or duplicate the document in the Finder) before you do this, to be on the safe side.

Cheers Walter! Freeway itself doesn’t require an internet connection, except perhaps when entering a serial number. So it should be fine offline.

It’s only 30MB so I don’t think that would be a factor.

30 MB is fine.

But if you have issues with a particular document, it might still be a good idea to click on Resample All in the Edit Resources dialog (after making a backup, as I suggested earlier). Freeway tracks resources through file aliases, and it can have problems if an alias gets corrupted.

Thank you, I will try that, it makes sense.
