There is an option in the FW upload dialogue box to ‘Save Log’ - not sure if FW is going as far as producing a log but it might be worth having a look in user>Library>Logs>Freeway5>FTP Logs and sending that to SP Towers.
But I would suggest that you do an Edit>Resources>Resample All before that then create a new Site Folder in the Finder, select it in File>Document Setup and publish a fresh copy of your site into it.
ive created a new site folder in finder. On freeway I then went into document and document setup and selected the new folder in the ‘site folder’ box. I then went to the upload box and selected ‘file copy’ and attempted to select the new folder and it said,
‘‘your local site folder and your upload folder must be different’’
tried it all now, still closing down, I get the ‘building site’ window come up but no blue line, it just closes after about 5 seconds.
I have recently been updating all of my meta tags ‘descriptions’ to get rid of invalid characters,
After completing this (on about 200 pages) the problems started. I assume the only way to see what the problem is would be to start deleting the description tags and keep trying to upload the site every 10 pages or so …,

You mean no progress bar?
I would do a Save As to create a duplicate of your FW file, choose a new Site Folder and try publishing into that. Don’t upload at this stage.
If you get no joy then delete a few pages and try again - remember that this is a copy so will not affect your actual site. If you dont save the changes after deleting some pages you can go back to the copy and try different pages to see if you can track down the one(s) that have a problem.
