Freeway style guru wanted.

I am looking for a Freeway developer to take my rather crappy web site and give it some style. I am too busy currently to continue with the development myself.

I am only interested in working with someone who will give me the complete file and who uses Freeway, as I intend to continue to make future changes and development myself when I have time.

I am happy to pay an hourly rate for this work but want an estimate prior to commencement.

Any suggestions, warnings.

Apologies if this is not the correct forum for this post.

It would be useful if you could provide a link to your site and/or some contact details.

And here, the result… http://www.theberrypatch.com.au

Achieved as an inline layout completely in Freeway Pro, featuring some
html5 and css3. There was a real challenge to meet the brief requirements…
I had to dial back some of my usual construction methods to more
comfortably allow for the client to make future edits. The result is more
inline and in-head code than I am normally happy with. Also, more actions
than usual (6 in all).

The graphics were fun - subtle texturing, the transitions between colored
frames, borders, shadows, etc. This project allowed me to learn more about
the new css3 background-size attribute. Didn’t get to do everything I
wanted, but I think the client will be much happier with the new look.

Yes that is a nice site. Would be cool to see how you put the graphics etc together. Softpress should have examples like this for us. I have asked since ver 4 if they could put up a tutorial of how they build softpress.com so we can all learn from it.

Happy client… Thanks to Ernie we got the site we wanted, in a good timeframe and at a very fair price. I can and will highly recommend Ernie as a developer, he spent more time on our project than I expected and did a lot more than we originally requested including some mock ups for a new logo and graphic editing.

Our site to many is probably too simple, but my brief was that we are a farm visit and not a graphic design studio. I think this point gets lost with some designers who’s every site has to be ‘impressive’. To be an honest reflection of the business it needs to have a feel that portrays the business not be a demonstration of the web developers “ability”.

The key to projects like this is BoxModel. I started to wrap a design process to achieve in a couple of screencasts. It’s a project with endless possibilities and is from the basics ready, steady go.

For all that are interested:

http://www.kimmich-dm.de/wordpress/index.php

It should be noted that the casts are not free, it should be noted as well that all the subscribers money will flow into the ActionsForge TNG:

http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/110865

So feel free to rush in. The currents stat definitely enables you to create a BoxModel, but to finish the design of the expected page will take me a couple of screencasts more.

So stay tuned and support the community with your subscription.

Cheers

Hi Ernie,
Yes, well done on a great looking site. Technically it is possibly a bit more cutting-edge than I would produce myself (with the HTML5 doctype and CSS3 styles) but it degrades well and looks great on modern browsers.

One of the biggest issues I’ve found with producing sites for fellow Freeway users is, as you mention, how to hand back a working site that doesn’t require a masters degree in markup or named CSS styles to maintain. There’s no point in handing back a site that works if it can’t be updated easily in Freeway. To address this I’ve been creating my own Actions that allow end users to easily update their sites without having to dig deep into Freeway’s edit styles dialog. Overall it has worked out well as these Actions can be easily dropped if the user wants to move into adding named styles (for example) by hand.

I’d be interested in knowing what the six Actions you used were. I can see three and maybe a fourth in the code.
Regards,
Tim.

Hey Tim,

The are the actions I used in the Turners Beach Berry Patch site:

1- HTML5 Page
http://actionsforge.com/actions/view/262-html5-page
I suppose it doesn’t really matter if the site was HTML5 or XHTML Strict… I
had planned at the beginning to follow the HTML5 route as part of my normal
process. Yet as I progressed, the thought that I was making a Freeway file
that would be impossible for anyone but me to work with began to wear on me.

2 - Advanced Inline Style Mover
http://actionsforge.com/projects/view/117-advance-inline-styles-mover
Another optional action… I love the AISM because I hate, hate, hate Freeway
Pro’s insistence on inline styles. Inline and Head styles should be the
exception, not the rule. AISM is used in only a few places like wrapping
divs. My normal use would have been to completely externalize all the
styles, and because my inline construction method uses a common framework
of variable-height elements it is possible to avoid some of the page-unique
problems Walt and I discuss in another thread. In the end, I decided that
course would make using the Freeway file untenably harder for the client.

3 - PageDiv Extended
http://actionsforge.com/actions/view/143-pagediv-extended
Capable of so much more, to me this action is the AISM for the PageDiv.
Optional in this case, and again one that I use to achieve my ‘clean code’
aesthetic.

4 - Upload Stuff
http://www.freewayactions.com/product.php?id=032
I’ve used and loved this brilliant plugin forever. Makes Freeway do all the
heavy lifting and keeps me from having to upload all kinds of stuff. Only
wish, that it could upload to the css folder, and create and upload to
custom destination folders like ‘js’ or ‘scripts’.

5 - Image Replacement
http://actionsforge.com/projects/view/110-imagereplacement
Normally this is something I generate in the Style palette. This however
leaves the FWP workspace recognizable to the novice user, so that.

6 - CSS3 Gradient Background
http://actionsforge.com/actions/view/201-css3-gradients
Again, this is easier for novice users to handle within Freeway, and easier
for me too. All those Extended dialogs can wear away your typing fingers.

Thanks RM,

I extended the box style with the CSS3 transform attribute:

transform: rotate(5deg);

Since I don’t know which browsers are current with this, I added browser
specific styles as well.

This will rotate the box and it’s contents, so it’s not actually the type
that is angled. However, I see no reason why adding this attribute to type
would not also work. Try it out :slight_smile:

Where do you insert the transform code in FWP?

Where do you insert the transform code in FWP?

It is note Code as such - it is a CSS style ie

  .mystyle {
            -webkit-transform:rotate(5deg);
               -moz-transform:rotate(5deg);
                -ms-transform:rotate(5deg);
                 -o-transform:rotate(5deg);
                    transform:rotate(5deg);
}

So you have to modify the stylesheet outside of FWP?

There’s a way to make Freeway Pro write this browser code for you. In the
style sheet. And, it will write in proper order as well.

You can be creative with this same approach – for example, commenting out
a style so you don’t have retype it after deleting it…
