Freeway templates and Backdraft

Just having a bit of a play with the ‘Estate’ FW template and the Backdraft modules (I like the template but find Backdraft to be an easier method of making a site responsive).
I inserted the ‘fourWrapper’ into the ‘Estate’ template, but when viewed in the browser it sees the 4 columns as a single column - cannot get it to be 4 columns.
Is it a case of you should only use one method or the other, but not both?
Apologies for no online example.
Many thanks.

I suspect it might have something to do with the page actions. “Flexible Page” or “Auto Clearfix (FW 7)” come to mind. Have you tried it the other way? Paste from Estate into a Backdraft template?

Ahh, didn’t think of that! Now that appears to work. Thank you.

Noel,

Backdraft has some environment dependencies that the template probably doesn’t have. The cause of your problem is likely due to the Box Sizing action not working correctly. That action requires that the page is actually a fixed width at each and every breakpoint for it to do it’s calculations. This is obviously a problem for a flexible website, so Backdraft uses the “Flexible Page” action to override the fixed widths and make the output flexible again. You can see some more details on how this works here: http://calebgrove.com/articles/box-sizing-and-backdraft

There is a workaround, and that is to use %-value padding (instead of pixel-value) on the columns. This circumvents the whole issue and will allow you to remove the Box Sizing action and not have to deal with that. In fact, Backdraft will probably be switching to this setup in the next release.

Many thanks for that Caleb. Looking forward to the next release of Backdraft.

I’m hoping to have a beta version ready in the next few days, keep your eyes peeled on http://getbackdraft.com.
