G3 Lombard

My old G3 lombard laptop is still very serviceable, but only has a 4gb hard drive. Does anyone know if there is a limit to how big a hard drive you can put in?

I’m not sure. I get confused with the naming of the old black
PowerBooks. I have a G3 one, 400MHz, USB, but no FireWire and
retaining the high-density SCSI. Is that the Lombard? or the Wallstreet?

Whatever, it was very happy with a 60GB hard drive, and I can’t
really see it being a problem to fit a larger one. The new drive had
the advantage of being nearly silent: the original 4GB and 6GB drives
are horribly whiney beasts.

Hope that helps.

I think you’ve got a Lombard, too, just a 400 one (mine’s 333). The last of the black G3s, the Pismo, added firewire I think.

Anyway, good to hear you lobbed a big disk in without problems. Do you run OSX on it?

I was thinking of a new (well, used!) iBook, but don’t think they’re as well made and they look a complete mare to work on if you have to go inside.

Yep. It’s only capable of running 10.3 Panther, though. Apparently
the Pismo, with built-in FireWire, can run Tiger.

I’m on Panther, so that’s ok.

I’ve read of so many problems with iBooks and even Titanium Powerbooks…scares me off. My lombard still looks good (and I prefer black!), has a great screen, hot swappable bays and has never missed a beat. Battery just a bit old and running out of disk space!

Fairly well too. Well, considering how old it is. And if the RAM’s
upgraded too.

There is a rather meagre limit on RAM I think with these old PowerBooks - some say 384mb max, although I’ve heard it said you can safely push this to 512mb, although beyond Apple’s recommended maximum.

I managed to put 1 Gb into my Pismo. Works fine.
