Greek fonts not showing correctly in HTML

The problem of Greek fonts is still on-going. They view perfectly when being made, previewed and even viewed through the browser, but when they are uploaded they view as rubbish code - through either Firefox or Safari.

I have been in contact with the freedom2surf Technical Support Team and they advised me to: "You will need to override the default setting on the server. To do this, create a text file named .htaccess (it is important that this is named exactly as shown so no file extension). In the text file add the following line on its own:AddDefaultCharset Offsave and upload this file then refresh the page (you may need to clear your browser’s cache). I did this and it disabled the website. The file was placed in the public_html folder. I have re-uploaded it. I am having to key all Greek text as graphics files. I have been advised to also paste the text in a box called ‘Alternative Text Box’ so that key words are picked up on searches. Do you think that this will be OK until a ‘proper’ solution can be found? The site needs to be up and running shortly.

Many thanks,

Sharon Huyshe

Do you have access to a different server? Even DotMac/MobleMe will do
for this. It sounds as though your server is messing with the pages as
it serves them – something no self-respecting host will do – and
therein lies the root of your trouble. There should not be any need to
adjust anything with an htaccess file, content-encoding is specified
by the page and Freeway does it correctly. If you post this to a
properly-configured server, you should see your content as you do in
Freeway. If you try this on another server and see that it works, then
you should either get your hosting provider to remove their “auto-
destroy” system from your account, or move to another host. There are
at least two people on this list who run hosting companies, and both
of them will work very hard to earn and keep your business for not
very much money.

Thank you Walter. This has been driving me mad…
