H1 & H2 tags

A professional web designer has just looked at a site of mine produced in Freeway and said “Still no h1, h2’s, etc though!” which he claims would help the search engine ranking.

I had no idea what these are really apart from what I have just read quickly on the internet, but is there any way these could be added now with Freeway or is it the sort of job that needs to be done manually?

When you create a new site FW creates an H1 style for you in the Text style inspector.

Just select your text and apply the style from there.

If you don’t like how it looks you can edit the style Control-Click the style in the inspector>Edit style and change its settings there.

You can also create an H2 style and apply it to any text on your page.

I think DanJ has a tutorial somewhere on using styles. Yup - http://home.comcast.net/~fwtuts/using_css/

I had those styles when I originally created the site in CSS, but when it was redone using the box model they seem to have disappeared. What I have heard about though for SEO is better described here http://www.everyjoe.com/articles/seo-basics-the-h1-h2-h3-tags-46/

Unless you have actually deleted (or renamed ) these styles then they shouldn’t just disappear.

But easy to add them back in.

Perhaps I am just getting confused because when I showed that web designer the original site which had these tags he seemed to suggest that they should be used in a different way for SEO purposes.

Different to the way that you had used them - is that why you binned them?

Now you know how and where to use them ( http://www.everyjoe.com/articles/seo-basics-the-h1-h2-h3-tags-46 /) then get them back in there.

I asked somebody else to help with the new box model version because I wasn’t sure how to do that and the tags got lost along the way. The strange thing though is that I have just manually changed the site so that the styles are applied as before and quickly viewed the file in Safari before uploading. When I view the source code there are still no h1 tags etc.

Have you actually done the upload?

If so do a Publish Everything (Hold the Control key while selecting File>Publish Site/Everything) and then try uploading again.

OK, I’ve done that but it’s made no difference from what I can see.

Which particular text have you applied the H1 style to?

Also try creating a new page just put a couple of lines of text on it and apply H1 to one of them and H2 to the other and then post a link so we can have a look.
