I’m curious about how people are finding using Xway. Any sites or sections of sites to show and talk about?
I know what we’re using now is a feature-incomplete beta, but after putting some time into trying it out properly I’m starting to REALLY like it! I found it really helped to have a specific site project to try and build rather than just poking around to see how things worked. (I know this from design and production teaching too; my students always benefit from planning and attempting to achieve a specific outcome rather than just testing some features or even going through a generic tutorial.)
I rebuilt my panorama site with Xway, and through doing it I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the process. I am really looking forward to using the finished version, whenever that might come!
So go on, let’s show stuff and see if we can pick up tips from each other.
I have been ‘poking around’ rather than re-building my sites, this is because my Freeway sites all have slide shows built with an Action. Until these are available its difficult for me to proceed other than ‘poking around’, but I am keen to use the finished article on my new iMac Catalina rather than maintaining my sites on a small screen laptop.
Yes, stuff made with Actions can be awkward to reproduce. I have used iframes in my Xway site to include content that is outside the scope of Xway itself. (It was also outside Freeway’s cope as it’s 360 VR photos and tours.) I wonder whether that might be a useful way to go for now? I haven’t tested these third-party slide show tools but if they can make self-contained HTML-based slideshows you could slot their output into an Xway page relatively easily.
But you’ll need to have SSL set up on your domain so you can use https rather than http in the iframe URL. Or use a protocol-relative // instead of the full https://. I hit a few learning point hiccups while getting this working, but I know https is basically where we should all be going and there are good reasons to not use http for iframe source content. It works fine with free SSL, nothing heavy-duty needed.
Ahh yes, that’s nice. I’ve never quite got along with the Bloxx theme but now I’ve seen this I’m going to have to give it another chance. Nice clean integration.
Hi - great to see more people experimenting! I have just a couple of comments…
The banner-style image at the top of the first page sets things up nicely. How about doing the same thing (same size, different image) for all your other pages?
Emerson (that is Ralph Waldo, not of Lake and Palmer fame) said that “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds” – but I say that a NON-foolish consistency is the secret to great design.
Also, play with typefaces. When something’s in Times New Roman it tends to look a bit ‘un-designed,’ even if you spent hours agonising over it.
