How man Pixels Per Inch?

As I’ve been working on a layout, it occurred to me that 72 dpi may no longer be a valid setting.

Are there any “standards” that people are using with all of the different monitor types and sizes?

First of all, this is a very slippery topic, and prone to a lot of
different interpretations. But please take this as received Gospel:
all images shown on all computer screens are displayed “as if” they
were 72ppi. It doesn’t matter what ppi you set them to in your image
editor, the browser will display them at a literal 72ppi, which can
and does lead to images appearing larger than you intend if they are
brought in as pass-through images in Freeway.

Where it’s easy to get confused on this is that the physical
dimensions of those pixels on screen may be more than 100ppi if you
get a ruler out and check, but if you want to keep your images in
scale with your text, or any other element that you size in pixels in
your CSS, you must make your images 72ppi. Freeway does this for you,
automatically, unless you are importing your images as pass-through.
