HTML view?

Does FW5 have an ACTUAL HTML viewer? I love the program, but it was always my thought that a web design program isn’t really “PRO” unless you have access to the HTML when you need it.

Actions like SourceCodeSnooper can be quite buggy, especially when dealing with Flash elements.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can fully access and view the html when it is published but Freeway doesn’t have anything to do with actual html until its published from its own object model of the site - (excepting having the capacity to insert blocks of it in specific locations).

So one can migrate any published site out of Freeway into any code editing environment - but this will not update to the Freeway document from which the site is published and so it tends to be a one way street or something to manage carefully if going in that direction.

The way it works is different and has Pros and Cons.

all the best

Bin-Ra,

Thanks for the information. I can totally respect the fact that FW is a different “breed” of web design software, which is why I love it. My concern is that when dealing with HTML in an external editor/viewer that the user is taken out of the safe zone that FW provides.

When you modify the HTML outside of FW, if you DO have to make revisions to the page again from your FW project file, the HTML modifications that were made outside of FW will be overwritten. This can ultimately lead to a lot of extra work, especially when dealing with a client who seems to have a new idea for their initial design every hour of the day.

It would seems that this situation doesn’t really have any “Pros” at all- just cons. It’s very limiting, in my opinion. Your thoughts?

Best,

TB

Why would you need to edit the code when you know that it is a) 100%
valid, b) clean and c) accessible. We have spent a lot of time
studying the standards and making sure that each time your pages are
published they are written in the best way possible to replicate your
design.

Let FW do the hard work and add any other functionality you want
afterwards.

It would be worth you looking at, and investing time learning how to put your HTML code edit’s directly through Freeway’s interface, and not after its published. Then your coded additions are editable, along all the other good things in Freeway when you publish and output the final code.

Freeway gives scope to do all kinds of HTML inserting, which is then added to the code on publishing, it just takes with a bit of forethought and planning.

Joe,

Thanks for your comment. I agree with you that FW’s code is very accurate, clean and reliable, however FW does not have all of the functionality and features that a professional web designer might need. An example of this would be FULLY customizable Javascript menu funtions. Sure- FW has SOME functionality here, but you can’t make a pop-up menu on the RIGHT side of a page, and have the sub-menus pop up on the LEFT of that menu, for example. It also can’t make a pop-up menu on the BOTTOM of the page with the sub-menus appearing ABOVE the menu. FW also can’t currently create “floating” pop-up menus that follow the user down/across a page.

I have had to design a lot of javascript menus in external applications and bring them into FW as HTML markup items. When this is the case, there is a lot of external editing required to make the pop-ups show ABOVE page content, etc.

Please understand that I am VERY fond of FW, and it is the ONLY web design program that I will ever use. I am merely trying to make suggestions for additional features and functionality that I think everyone could benefit from.

Best,

TB

Granted Freeway doesn’t have fully customizable JavaScript menus built
in but as you rightly say and as I mentioned previously you can design
your layout in Freeway and add your code in afterwards. Try using a
high z-index such as 99 as a css style for the menus you are making.
This should force them to appear above the other content on the page.

Excellent! Keep the suggestions rolling in!
