HTML5 or XHTML5

I’m looking for a a brief explanation in layman’s terms for:

  1. the difference between HTML5 and XHTML5

  2. when you would use one over the other

  3. how to set Freeway 6 so that it defaults to a new document setting of HTML5

Thank you.

The only difference between them is syntactical. XHTML5 is HTML5 with XML syntax rules. Browsers don’t care which one you choose. Choose one over another based on your need to interact with third-party code or programmers. Changing this preference (and it can be changed on a page-by-page basis) does not affect the visual result in a browser.

To set the defaults for new documents, first, make sure all open documents are closed. Then go through the main menu in Freeway looking for enabled options. File / Document Setup will set the defaults for all new documents. Edit / Font Sets will do likewise for the various font sets you might want to use. There are others hidden in there as well.

Anything you set while no documents are open will create the application defaults. Any document you already created will have its own preferences, which will override these defaults. If you want to change a preference for all future pages you may add to an existing document, you can change that in the Document Setup for that document. The change will only affect pages that have not yet been created. Existing pages will need to be modified by altering the settings for their Master Page or the individual instance pages.

Worth noting Walter, that the advice you gave is good only for new Custom documents. Not new documents based on the currently loaded set of Templates – and this includes new blank document.

That is true. I tend not to use any of the templates, not even the blank one. You might try making a new document based on a template, then save that new document as a new template.
