Got it. Don’t have time to play at the moment but i’ll comment once I do. Interface is pretty clean and there are hidden features. Output seems like it will be html5 only which I guess makes sense.

HYPE is definitely a very cool app, but not as the name implies over promised. If you are ready to start the Flash detox process HYPE is the perfect starting point. If you have used any other animation program (AE, Flash, Motion, EWA, etc.) that works with a timeline you will feel right at home. Hype has the ability to draw simple shape objects or type objects, or it can use imported photos and graphics, and that even includes embedding html5 compliant video. They can all be animated. Drop shadows, borders, colored backgrounds, spins, opacity, all available to all objects. I did have an issue importing a png file and not seeing the transparent background, but with a simple checkbox I was able to get that working.
The one weakness I see is lack of audio which has more do with html5 than anything else. Although you can probably get sound in via a video file, that isn’t ideal.
The thing to keep in mind here is that the outcome of using HYPE is strictly html5. That means the effects and functionality is limited to the specs of html5 and CSS3. Having said that, there is enough flexibility here to do just about anything can think of.
It can do 95% of what Flash does. It has a interesting “Scene” function which is something like animated pages where you can have multiple Scenes and link them together to create a longer project.
Only available through Mac App Store so that means 10.6 OSX required. US$29.95 price is introductory so will be going up, but even at twice the money it would be worth it.

Hmm… layering pngs is certainly not a problem, but the parallax effect really is more of a live effect controlled by mouse movement. You probably could fake it by manually animating two or more objects so they appear to move opposite to each other but there would be no control from the browsers point of view. Although there is some interactivity by allowing button objects that can start/goto url/switch scenes/or perform custom javascript, there is no mouse following events other than up/down/click/over/out.
Hype is very much in the traditional animation vein akin to Powerpoint for example with some basic interactivity thrown in. Animations can start, stop, proceed to next scene, or return to beginning. As I mentioned elsewhere this app creates html5 and CSS3 compliant code so anything that is not part of those specs it won’t handle.

It just occurred to me that you could link some javascript to a button that would perform a parallax effect. But this would be some third party javascript that produces the parallax effect and separate from Hype’s animation scripting.

I would say yes it is. I prepared a replacement to a animated flash advert with Hype in just a few minutes.

I bought it at the intro $29.95 but haven’t had a serious play yet - but for that sort of money it is deffo worth a punt.
