Icons with rollover, transforming groups

I’ve got six icons lined up horizontally that are close together. My intention is that on rollover an L-shape box appears to reveal the name of the page. The way I have gone about it is to create a group of the two images and add a rollover action. This works fine individually but when the icons are lined up close (as my design goes) the group, even after making the item a path that jogs around each item, is still just a whole box that triggers the rollover when on the icons to the left. Is there another way to get desired outcome? Is there any way to just shape the item box?

You can draw an L shape item using the ‘Path’ tool (click and hold on
the Graphic Tool and it will be revealed). Just click from corner
point to corner point to make the shape. Hold down shift to keep lines
square.

You can select which Items are visible in each state in the Action
window, when you click on the rollover. I suggest you make you
rollover pairs separately on the pasteboard (i.e. outside your page
area) and then line up in position.
