Importing MacDraw II files with v3.4.3

I have quite a few old MacDraw II, MacDraw Pro and ClarisDraw files. One of the reasons I’m looking at Intaglio is that it promises to give me access to those old drawings again. Unfortunately, when I attempt to open MacDraw II files I get the error message “The file’s resource fork couldn’t be opened.” Any clues?

Are you sure you have not lost your resource files along the way? When moving files from old Macs to new that is not uncommon, for example if you move it on a PC formatted USB drive. Check the file size. Does it look healthy?

Another option is to go to that old Mac that I am sure you have (right?) and print your drawings to PDF. Intaglio is pretty good at making most PDFs editable. (I have some that are not, but most work with just a little cleaning.) Or save as PICT. Or compress your MacDraw drawings with Stuffit before transferring to the new Mac.

The importing capabilities was important for me too. I chose between EzDraw and Intaglio, and found that Intaglio does a much better job with my files. (As a bonus, it is not a total mess of versions and variants like EzDraw.)

Thanks Ingmar.

It’s likely those resource files are long gone unfortunately.

I do have some ancient back-up CDs that I’ll have to check.
And there is one Mac in the "chain of custody” still existing that just might be able to help.

Time to do a little research.

have you the extension .pct in the file name ? try to complete the name with .pct ; when I were using Claris Draw, Mac didn’t use extensions yet ! Such files cannot be opened, but when I add the extension there is no more problem !

I have had similar problems with MacOS 10.8.5+ pulling files out of SVN if the file does not have a dot file extension. Study the manpage for xattr(1). You can use it to read the FinderInfo from a good file to copy to a problem file. Use something similar to "xattr -wx com.apple.FinderInfo " to write the modern equivalent of the old Creator and Type fields. One issue is that the modern version is not limited to ASCII text.

Putting resource forks in SVN is another problem altogether.

Yes, this thread isn’t about SVN but SVN creates similar problems as to what is suspected of the MacDraw II files.

MacDraw Pro and most other OS8 or OS9 applications can be accessed inside Sheepshaver. In MacDraw, save as PICT2, open in Intaglio and choose Convert>Picture For Editing.
