Interesting perspective on pricing

I read this yesterday. Needs discussion here, I think. I’m considering switching to this model myself.

He makes some good observations and in many ways I’ve been doing things in a similar fashion from the start … up to a point. Even though I’ve never had what I would call client horror stories (difficult yes), personally I would never work without at least a basic contract. I’ve been very fortunate with my clients in that there’s always been a nice atmosphere of trust but both parties need to understand what’s expected of them going in and that’s what my contract does.

I also need to establish some sort of general work schedule for myself and know when to say, “Ok, that enough for today.” My life has other important obligations beyond work and I’m not at the beck-and-call of clients. I do go above and beyond when necessary but the inmates don’t run this asylum. I do charge by project based on the scope, not a flat-fee. But for certain types of smaller scale work I also go hourly (e.g. occasional site maintenance) because sometimes it makes more sense to do so. Even if you don’t charge by the hour you almost have to know how your fee breaks down to an hourly rate, don’t you? Well, I do anyway.

If his way works for him great, but in some respects there are things I wouldn’t feel comfortable changing because I would feel too exposed. I’m not by any means a fan of rigid rules and I like the “spirit” of the article but at some point (for me) a certain degree of pragmatism needs to come into play too; a balance. I’m not willing to blindly trust a client will pay up because it’s the right thing to do.
