I take it back – Safari 6 triggers the “supported” message, but seems to
work as far as I can tell.

So much for version sniffing – a truly bad idea in almost any context. You should check if a feature is usable with a test, and provide a polyfill if it isn’t (or fail gracefully in some other way).
