I recovered the files about a half hour after I hung up. The versions are all there, properly numbered, and the system is restored to a state where it can record new versions going forward.
In the process, I deleted all of the version information and recovered from the files on disk. This had the effect of “playing back” the events that changed the database over time, in order, allowing the paper_trail system to record each of those events. Naturally they all have the wrong timestamp, but we never show that to people in the interface, so nobody should be the wiser.
