iPhoto trashed some pictures

Don’t normally use iPhoto so if I’ve been clumsy excuse me, but had to to empty the SD card of 2,400 pics. iPhoto was the only option when the camera was plugged in. First 2 days were imported no problem. 4th day began importing new pictures and iPhoto crashed. We were getting into large numbers. so it was easier to delete the existing Library and start again. The import worked fine. Next morning checked iPhoto library and the first 4 days (events) are missing. Only the little thumbnails are visible in edit mode. The events are ‘seen’, but the pictures are not and iPhoto cannot do anything with them. The appropriately dated Folders do not appear in the desktop either, although the pictures we have do appear.

The sad thing is we are doing a tour of the Normandy beaches, museums and the Cemeteries and we’ve lost Utah, Omaha, Dead Man’s Corner, St Mere Eglise, Carentan, Cherbourg and Maisie Battery. All mind opening and sobering.

I’ve tried Applejack and fsck -fy and would welcome any other suggestions from you guys. Won’t be back online till about 21.00 France time.

Yours in hope.

Are the pictures still on the card? If so, I’d recommend plugging the
camera back in to the computer and dragging them off manually into a
Desktop folder or somesuch. If not then I’d try ProSoft’s Data Rescue
on the card:

It’s not free but you can use it to see if the files are recoverable,
then buy it if so.

Yeah, don’t delete the pics on the card, first of all.

Second of all, you could simply try starting from scratch in iPhoto. If this is the first time you’ve used it, trash the old library and start over. If not, I hope you have a backup and you can copy that and start from there.

Unfortunately they have been deleted from the card, not by me and against my advice, hence the problem. I’m also wondering if pictures can be Un-erased as per Nortons used to be able to do. I have tried in the past with an SD card to do this but never succeeded. Presumably the technology exists does it? If the SD card has not been used since erasure can this be done?

See my recent post regarding using ProSoft’s Data Rescue on the card:

Thanks gentlemen.

Paul, I am seriously impressed with DRII - it actually works on flash memory. Tried the demo and bought it. Every file recovered I think. This trip is to specifically visit and photograph these locations and then due to youthful exuberance and a glitch in iPhoto, most of it was wiped and we thought lost.

Can’t thank you enough for your recommendation. My son has learnt his lesson. I also wish his photography was up to your quality - maybe one day.

Thanks again guys - from the heart.

K.
