Anyone using a 5th (or 4th) gen. iPT as a Skype phone? Seems like it would make a great Wi-Fi phone. But with the mic on the back I’m wondering how well it works.
I imagine with the Apple earbuds for the iPhone it would be quite good. That tiny mic is pretty awesome.

I have a friend who regularly calls me from Paris on some free public
street WiFi often with much better results than a conventional phone.
I regularly use my iPad 3rdGen to Skype people in the UK, Europe and
beyond with great results, both video and voice.

That’s great to know Peter! I think I’m going to go that route. I was originally looking at Skype-specific phones then I stumbled upon the iPod alternative. I can’t believe it never occurred to me before now, it seems like a so much nicer option.
Thanks,
Todd

I’m in a similar position: I have a creaky first gen. Ipevo phone (now discontinued) that’s problematic (probably a software driver issue). I’ve had a Skype phone number and monthly subscription for years which has been a boon in terms of cost. I don’t need a traditional calling plan or iPhone so for me this is the perfect middle ground in terms of cost and convenience.

Yup, I had a Netgear Skype phone some wears ago it was very good, but one day it just stopped working, of course by then it was discontinued.
BTW I also use my iPhone to do Skype, I’ve actually got a different ID on that to separate out calls. I bought Skype credit on it when I was doing my regular cycle/camp through France and used it on many campsites [most seem to have WiFi now] to call home and friends. Worked perfectly. And it’s really cheap even with long call times ;~}}
