Italics

I use columns of text on my website and for the first time I’m using Times instead of Trebuchet. This is within a standard HTML block, not a graphics block. When I’m doing layout in Freeway 5 Pro the italics are rendered in their proper font size. But when I use either preview or “view in broswer” the font size of the italicized words seem to be rendered in a smaller size, noticeably smaller than the adjoining text. Annoying. Would appreciate any suggestions. I’ve tried Preview, Safari and Firefox. Same deal.

Thanks very much,

Britt

Let me add that my work-around is to select the italicized words and add two points to the font size. But that’s kind of clumsy. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

Hi Britt

I tried this - don’t normally use Times so thought I would try it out.

I used a little utility that I have called ‘Free Ruler’ and I measured the normal and italic versions and found no difference.

Free Ruler for Mac OS X

Have you actually put this online somewhere that we can see it?

Thanks, Dave. Yes, I would appreciate your confirming what I think that I’m seeing. Because to my eye there is a difference that I notice when I compare the ascenders of the Roman font versus the Italic font.

I’m going to publish my page tomorrow, probably in the morning L.A. time, as is. I’m not going to do the work-around where I increase the font size of the italicized text, because it throws off the leading. And it’s a pain. If you’d have a look tomorrow, I’d appreciate it. www.veritas-anydaynow.com.

OK, I just used my xScope Ruler and you’re absolutely right. Forget my last transmission. It’s an optical illusion, my own personal optical illusion. Thanks for your help and the suggestion about using the ruler. I still wonder what I’m seeing, but it could be a matter of fatigue, a lack of good cheap wine. Thanks very much.

I suspect it is the difference between the ‘slanted roman’ rendering
if italic that you see in Freeway’s design view and the true italic
cut of Times that you see when it is rendered in a browser or by
WebKit in Freeway’s preview mode.

Times Italic is a very different design from the upright cut of Times.

Thanks, Keith. I did a test of Times in a graphics box rather than an html box. The font style Times Italic can be chosen from the drop-down. And when that style is rendered it’s perfect. But when using standard html Times and the italics button is chosen to slant the text the x-height of the letters is off–noticeably lower.

So my question is, each week I plan to publish a piece of 1500 words or so. Would it make any sense to publish my pieces–all 1500 words–as graphics?

If you wouldn’t having a look at my site you’ll see the problem I’m trying to correct.

Well, have noticed the same optical illusion for years in some print fonts. I lack time to be thorough today, but the short of it is try making your italic text 1pt larger than the regular text it is surrounded by.

This is never a good idea if you are interested in being found by
search engines, or visited by visually disabled persons.

Note carefully what Keith pointed out: the font IS shown correctly in
the browser (and Preview mode), only Freeway’s Design view is
distorting reality by not using the true Italic when showing you the
italic text.

Don’t worry, you’re okay to use HTML text!

Thanks for all the help. Increasing the font size by one point did the job.
