I hate MS.

Anyone know of another digital asset management tool that will allow me to make quick image changes to stills? Besides iphoto that is.

Aperture and Lightroom are both highly qualified in this area.
They’re pro apps, though, not that cheap.

I’m really looking for something that I can manage my stills and video in one location. Thanks Walt.

There’s a few others out there, not sure where they are any more, but
I used to use Canto Cumulus, and there was another one by Extensis
that we used at another agency I worked at. I currently use MediaPro
(non MS version) and like it a lot.

Thanks. Perhaps I’ll just suck it up and buy an MS app.

Hi Tony,

If you wanted to you can still buy MediaPro 3.13 (the last non MS version) from http://www.phaseone.com/Content/EshopMenu/SpecialOffers.aspx
iView Media (if you can still find it for sale anywhere - maybe on eBay?) was the cut down version of MediaPro and retailed for less than $50. It still handled video content as well as most common (non RAW) images although a lot of the repurposing functions (editing and exporting) had been removed.

Other asset managers include (in no particular order);
Canto Cumulus,
Extensis Portfolio,
Bento from Filemaker has been getting some good reviews.
Depending on what level of functionality you need from the application you may find a shareware solution on VersionTracker.com as recent frameworks from Apple have given developers a lot of the hooks to easily make DAM solutions based on Cocoa and QuickTime.

Total disclosure: I used to work for iView Multimedia on MediaPro and now work on Expression Media at Microsoft.
All the best (from the dark side),
Tim.

I think Expression is a dog. iView could have been really great (it is great in many respects) but the lack of database import facility (csv/tab delim etc) makes it practically useless unless starting a collection from scratch.

I would look at Photo Mechanic to answer Duotone’s specific question, but at that price you may as well get yourself Lightroom or Aperture for the sake of it.

I may be the only one to suggest this, but many Adobe products come with a program they call “Bridge”. With this tool I can manage assets (especially graphic ones) very well. It has completely replaced my old un-updated version of iView Media Pro.

Unlike iPhoto and Aperature, there is no bloat associated with file revisions - (the app doesn’t automatically create duplicates). You can create different ways of viewing files, and for images easily see meta information. If you use other Adobe products, the integration is nice - but you can also assign filetypes to open in other apps.

Yeah, I’ve used Bridge and I like how it doesn’t create duplicates as well as retains the original paths.

My only beef with Bridge and what I like about iphoto is the basic photo adjustments I can make without opening photoshop to do minor changes to photos. This is why I thought of iview as a solution.

I’ve not used iView since the MS acquisition, so I have no way to evaluate the most recent version - but I should emphasize that I was a long time user of iView Media Pro and loved it! Absolutely. However, I did not love the ridiculous upgrade pricing and let it fall out of use.

The version of Media Pro I have doesn’t let you make changes outside of an editing application. I still use Media Pro (my version still works btw) for cataloging Photo CD libraries. Bridge doesn’t support the (now ancient) format… and the Photoshop plugin only works when PSD is started in Rosetta. Three cheers for the benefits of proprietary formats! Not.

Like Walter, I use the non-MS version of Media Pro, and have done ever since
first using a “lite” version which shipped with early versions of Toast. I
don’t use iPhoto at all, as I don’t like iPhoto archiving, although I have
yet to experiment with iPhoto 2008. I edit images with PS, but create all
Slideshows, including the odd short video, with Media Pro, which then
encodes into HTML, ready for FTP to external folders linked from within
Freeway. Works seamlessly, and works for me. I suppose it’s just possible
that the odd non-MS version might still be around, but having trialled the
MS, it’s OK, and not a lot different from the original, apart from a few
more bells & whistles.
