Joining strokes

Two ways to make a semi-circle, by breaking a circle or creating an arc. Sometimes, I might need to do it the first way even though it is a bit more involved.

Can anyone explain why I can join the two ends to make a J shape with an arc (right), but not a broken circle (left), the join option remains stubbornly greyed when using the broken circle.

The problem is that you have a line segment at the end of your curve that is very short (close to zero length) so you’re not seeing it. When you select the two points to join you’re actually getting three points so join is disabled (since it doesn’t know how to join three points). If you try to move the point on the end of the arc you should see the extra point and be able to delete it. Then you should get the result you want.

Thanks, I will look out for that in future. Any reason why deleting the point on the circle created that extra one?

I just option-clicked it and it downloaded fine, no removal of .txt needed.

Whenever I need to do something to a circle so that it’s going to fall on the horizontal or vertical tangent, I’ve found it’s easier to rotate the circle 45 degrees first so that I KNOW I’m always creating new control points.
