I’ve just installed Freeway, my previous experience is with Photoshop and
Illustrator etc.
I’ve seen the mention of layers, how does this work/apply compared to the
previous software?

Not exactly the same idea. When Freeway talks of layers, it is referring to DIVs (Divisions), which are a specific HTML tag. DIVs are a generic container tag. They can be positioned, have size, shape, color, etc. They can contain anything. Freeway works very hard to abstract the specifics of HTML (and this is one of them) from you as you design. So the way to approach layers in Freeway is to use them to organize your layout. If you draw a box on the page while the CSS Layout button is on, you will have created a layer. That layer can contain other layers, or it can stand alone and hold text or a picture.
