Links open in new window

This seems to me to be a simple thing so I can’t understand why no one has complained about the links posted in the forum that don’t open in a new window.
I find it absolutely maddening to have clicked on a poster’s link, follow his/her recommendations or references and then have to click back, back, back, back to get to the forum.

I frequent many forums and this is the only one that handles links this way. Very strange indeed?

Just found the answer to my own question in a recent post. The Apple key. What a relief!

Actually, someone did post about that recently. If you’re using Safari (as well as possibly other browsers) and have tabs enabled, you just have to remember to command-click or shift-command-click to open links in new tabs.

Thanks Joe,
I’m using Firefox and the Apple key trick works fine.

I’ve answered this before. The forum is coded in XHTML Strict, which
does not allow the Target attribute to be set. I could easily use
JavaScript to add this back in, but try to put yourself into the
thought pattern of the designers of the standards:

The browser is the site visitor’s property. The Web developer does
not own the browser, and cannot determine when a window is opened or
closed. If the visitor wants to open a new window when a new link is
clicked on, then the visitor can use a modifier key (Command-click
usually does this) to get that behavior. Or the visitor can use the
Back button and the browser history, which is actually broken by the
new window trick.

So while I could do this, I don’t consider it to be good behavior. I
actually agree with the W3C about this. But if I find myself with
nothing to do one day, I will add it as a user preference, next to
the smilies and page width control.

It will be a cold day in Hell when Walter has nothing to do!
