locating style usage

I have a few .style1, .style2 etc. in my site which is a big site. Is there a way of locating where these styles are used in the FW doc. rather than just deleting and replacing them as I want to make sure nothing is pulled out of place when I do delete them.

What I do is this:

  • Publish site so that all pages are up to date.
  • Temporarily change style1 to something obviously different from any other style, so it will stand out (make it a colour that’s not used for this site, for instance).
  • All pages that use style1 will now have dots before their names in the list: on one of these pages it’s easy to find all the instances of style1 and replace it with an existing style or simply remove it as necessary.

Thanks Michael, that sounds like a plan to me!

What would be the best way to avoid these .styles from creeping in?

I’ve found if I plan my site and set up the styles before I start adding content it helps me to stay organized.

I do have all my styles set-up. But, when I select some text that is already styled and retype something then a new .style is added.

Yes, this is just one of the situations where Freeway creates a new style for apparently no reason. I’m always on the lookout for this and try to kill the style at once.

I really don’t know why a new style is created. This happens when the text style has settings both for Character and Paragraph: select a word and retype and a new temporary style is created, that has the same character settings as the original style but no paragraph settings. In the last site I did, I made sure that my styles only had settings either for Character or for Paragraph, but not for both.

Thanks Michael, it is worth keeping an eye on these as it drastically reduces the size of the css file.

This is good SEO housekeeping as Google does like faster sites now.

I have applied this method but for me all pages get a dot before it even if the altered style is not present on that page. Any one know a reason for this?

Do you have your site set to use External Stylesheets in the Site
Preferences? That could cause this behavior.

I do not see reference to External Stylesheets in the Preferences but I do see one in Document Set Up. There it is unticked. Should I be looking anywhere else?

Now that I have ticked it I am getting the dots only on the affected pages. I guess this is what you meant Walter. R
