Lately I’ve just been feeling flat in terms of new design ideas…maybe it’s the January weather or the lack of sunlight, but what ever it is - the well has run dry. Just wondering what you all do when you are seeking inspiration and creativity. URLS? books? gurus?
Personally I try to find a design solution to the client’s problem. Which is nothing to do with creativity. Start with pencil thumbnail sketches (lots of) and wireframes pinning down the function first. Making the design job into a process you find the creativity appears along the way. Staring at a blank sheet and doing nothing is the worst thing to do.

I had a horrendous time leading up to Christmas just couldn’t get excited about anything creative at all - but what I found helps (and its probably the hardest way) is just pure persistence, hard graft, don’t stop trying out new ideas, no matter how bad they seem just keep going, whether by pen or mouse.
What I found was that the next project was a lot easier… kinda like a had given the creative side of the brain a really hard workout and was now reaping the benefits…
All the above too of course but when just talking about pure creativity…
Get out and do something that only can enjoy. Away from the phone and emails. The best for me is taking the Ducati for a blast down some twisty back roads. Obviously can’t ride the bike in the winter but sometimes a walk through the wine store just looking at wine labels gets the juices flowing never mind what a fine red can do for the soul as well.
I have found that when we do a lot of strategic sessions with the client and figure out the (who, what, why) content before we start designing it is much easier to design around the content. Wireframes and sticky note org charts all help to formulate the design.
And as others have said - draw - something magic happens when we go old school and put a pencil to paper.

Thanks,

Rich, that’s too funny. Strangely, I’m having the same problem. It’s like I’ve lost my creative mojo or something. Maybe a warm glass of Disaronno Liqueur will help.
The funny thing is most of my clients think ideas come to me immediately. I’ve had some people give me a creative problem and say, “Okay, designer boy what do you got?”, expecting me to impart some form of creative wisdom on demand and without giving the problem enough careful consideration.
Sometimes non-creative people think creative types just pull this stuff out of their ass. It’s usually amusing to me, but sometimes I just want to hit them … repeatedly.

Dude, you are too funny. Thanks for cracking me up. LOL
Of course all the while saying: “That’s-not-how-it-WORKS!”
