I switched just the home page to a new master page (blank) that is only 800 high. When I preview or publish it reverts to the old master page’s height of 2000 and also adds the old footer.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

This is something that we cannot diagnose from your online page as this happens before it gets published.
If you switch a Master then if an item on the page before switching has lost its link to the Master then it is left alone.
So look at items on the page and see if they retain the Tick in the checkboxes for Use Master Content and Use Master Settings

Fixed! There were 3 items I found via the Master Content checkboxes as you suggested and then around 6 more that didn’t have the checkmarks but obviously shouldn’t be there (all of the offending pieces were invisible so I was going by process of elimination).
