Master Pages

I’m wondering if I am not using Master Pages properly. Occassionally, I change something on the master and the associated page with it either doesn’t update, or just looks odd. I generally go to page and “reapply master.” Sometimes, I go to the master, select what I want, and paste it on the child page. Which is better?

At the moment, the only thing on my master page is the banner and associated buttons. It’s not a huge deal, but because I want the button to be a different color on each of the active pages, I’m changing that manually each time I have to “reapply master.”

If you need to see what I’m talking about, here is the temporary home for this website:

Here’s where my master page issues become a pain: the height of all my pages is different, and I don’t want that to be determined by the master page. In other words every time I reapply the master, I have to re-adjust the height of the page. Am I missing something simple, or is this just the nature of things?

Thanks,
Doty

Master pages can be tricky until you understand them. When you create a master, then a page from the master, if you change anything on the non-master page, it becomes a separate item. If you reapply the master, the original item gets added back, creating some bad effects. Try it out, start with a new default blank “Site” put a couple of buttons on the Master1. Watch as they are auto added to the Untitled page which has Master1 as its master. Click on the Untitled page in the site list and change a button, move it. Reapply the master, see what happens.
