Mavericks - Trusted Apps

I went to launch an open-source app ( http://www.brackets.io/ ) today and OSX 10.9 told me the app could not be opened because the developer was unknown and could not be trusted. This was new and unexpected to me, so I am sharing in case anyone else is taken by surprise.

Apparently, the new operating system protects you from sketchy apps taking over your computer or something. Opening the Security & Privacy settings in the System Preferences reveals the settings for this. They are limited to three options - allow only apps from the App Store to run, allow only App Store apps and those from some unidentified developer list, and run All apps regardless of where they are from.

If you have strict settings - I think the default is the second (App Store and Trusted Developers) - you can get around it without changing your security setting by holding the control-key as you click the app icon, choose “open” from the contextual menu, and then the resulting security warning will include an “Open” button option.

Since I opted for the most lax security, no surprises if I come back later and post about my computer having exploded from a terrorist app.

That’s interesting, I use brackets too and I never got an alert nor have I touched the security preferences.

Before I learned a little more about the issue, I even went back to the
brackets website and re-downloaded it to make a fresh install, and was
still blocked from opening it.

My laptop is still using Lion and also has application trust settings in
the Security prefs, so this feature isn’t new to Mavericks - though I was
able to use Brackets prior to the update.

Once you open it once with the Control key trick, does it allow you to open by double clicking the next time?

It would appear to… even setting my Security prefs back to App
Store/Trusted Developer List allows me to open the Brackets app.

I miss the visual comfort of the linen.

It always reminded me of the cover from my old Argus slide projector. Built like fine luggage, that was.
