MODx

I’m finally getting back to transferring my site to MODx http://modx.com/ and I gotta say (again) what a sweet CMS it is, a real standout. For those users who need a robust and truly designer-friendly solution it’s a great option. Not that it requires an action suite to incorporate into a Freeway site but I suspect many FW users wouldn’t even consider it because there isn’t an action suite for MODx and therefore would only consider using EE or Joomla with FW. A shame, really. It would be nice if one of the action writers out there looked into developing a MODx suite. Just sayin’ …

Not really seen much of MODx but heard about it on the grapevine - how are you finding it?

If it’s good as you say, I wouldn’t mind trying it out. Do you have any pointers for a starter / beginner?

Hi Nathan,

I’ve been very slowly moving my site over to MODX as time permits so I’m not a power-user but I find it to be a very well thought out app and a pleasure to use both as an admin/editor but more importantly to me, as a designer. The devs have really made an effort to create a powerful tool that is geared towards the designer. I have limited experience with EE, Joomla and Wordpress (just took over WP site) but I’m finding MODX preferable (though EE is great).

I suppose the term “good” is relative, but to me it is. As for pointers, I can’t help with regard to using it with FW, I never took more than a cursory glance at combining the two. But install a local copy and play around with it. The docs are good and the community is thriving and friendly. Just understand that it’s still a hands-on process, it’s not WebYep. Still, if you’ve used any of the other Big Boy CMS (with FW or not) then learning MODX should not be a problem, especially if you have a basic familiarity with CSS/HTML and how content tags work.

One of my favs, alongside Perch.
