Moving Servers

I’ve just gone through a week of extreme effort (in a couple of days) moving servers for my clients and myself at Joyent. I just made all of the DNS changes, and things may take a little while to percolate across the webverse, but you should be seeing a new server at any of my old URLs.

Both servers are still live until the 7th, but there’s one little wrinkle that might bite you.

If you use Fling, it’s possible that you will upload to one server and your intended recipient(s) will try to download from the other. There’s no way for me to synchronize the two databases so that they write into both servers at the same time (I tried, for hours and hours to get MySQL replication to work, and failed) so you will just have to accept the possibility that you might need to upload again if your client doesn’t have the updated DNS info at the same time as you.

Looking forward to a lower server bill and much higher performance, though.

Oh to have the knowledge to spend hours and hours getting MySQl to work let alone replication!

I’ve just spent hours and hours nutting out how to style “text-transform:uppercase;”

May the rest of your move be a smooth and happy one!

I have a few clients on disparate servers that really should be moved to give them a better, more cost effective offering.

But I am loathed to put them (and me) through the potential hassle.

Really a job for a long holiday weekend when there are no distractions and minimum upset.

December 25th seems like a good date - persuading my other half of that may not be easy though!
