I don’t have a problem with it…as long as you purchase the highest level ram capacity at the start. SSD can be upgraded later which is about all I would think might be necessary. Repair concerns are valid, but Macs are very reliable in general under normal use so I wouldn’t expect any need for repair for the lifetime I would use it for.

The retina display is another issue. LOTS of apps to update… That alone would make me wait awhile to purchase.

Except that Apple bends you over with inflated prices for RAM compared to buying it through Crucial or Kingston. Now that I can’t upgrade it myself I have no option but to pay Apple’s inflated price. I’ve been steadily losing respect for Apple.

Apple is not Dell or HP or Asus etc. where computers are just commodity products built with standard and frequently low grade hardware. While more expensive in comparison hardware wise, I personally think Apple’s computers are worth the extra expense for the longevity you get out of them.

I agree. I wouldn’t mind so much if I were a college student or a certified
public accountant whose only care were crisp beautiful to-do lists. But I’m
a Graphic Man, dagnabbit! We consume gigabytes and teraflops for breakfast!
We are the people that upgrades were invented for… We are what power users
dream of becoming one day. If they’re lucky!

MBP’s have become the ubiquitous tool of the modern graphic nomad. So much
for “designed in California”.

The bit about the screen is not quite right, to have thin profile and save weight the heavy glass has to go.

If you want a strong response you need a blog post like this one

I do think they make a better product but I really resent not being able to upgrade the RAM. And while the overall product is better I’m not going to pay “x” number times more $ for RAM from Apple because I don’t believe that aspect to be superior to what I get from Crucial.

That’s a good point Chuck, and generally I agree. However, Apple does not
automatically include the best hardware, the definition of which may depend
on your needs. Or the best pricing, either.

I am sympathetic to all you are saying, and if this discussion was about a regular MBP I would agree, but because this particular MBPwRD is pushing the “pro” hardware envelope to an extent, I am willing to accept a premium price for the time being simply because it can’t be had any other way. Inflexibility of upgrade options is disappointing on it’s face taken in context of previous MBPs but this is a different first generation animal in my opinion.
