Navigation Bar Actions

:slight_smile:
That’s actually the URL to the page’s location on your own computer. What we need is an online location…

Sorry guys - I haven’t published this to an online location yet - didn’t want to until it looked a bit better than this. Have recently returned from living in another country - new website but also new software! This problem must have something to do with layers and thought it would be something silly and easy.

It may well be Jan but unless we can see it it is very difficult to diagnose.

Bingo! I have fixed it … I must be a bit dumb but just in case anybody else experiences this problem … all that is needed is to reduce the size off the html box (that you have typed in all the information for a navigation/menu bar). Finally I decided to shorten the box until it was approx the thickness of the navigation bar as seen once published and … voila … it works! Why doesn’t the tutorial tell you to do this incredibly simple thing once you have completed the layout?

Is it possible that your navigation box was not a layered item in the first place?

I guess that must be so Dave - I simply followed the online tutorial which did not mention layers (I have Express). I am reasonably competent with InDesign but have never seen anything in Freeway to that end.

Ah - I didn’t realise you had Express

Layers aren’t an option to you then!

Which makes it more difficult when we dont know what version you have.

Not to worry - just remember that you cannot have overlapping items in Express without some consequences - either graphics combining or HTML items pushing other things about.

I’ve been looking for a simple navigation bar with drop down submenus. I read that Freeway has one, and there’s an item for it on Freeway Actions, but I don’t know what to do with that.
WHERE IS THIS TUTORIAL you folks are talking about? I do searches on Freeway Knowledge Base and Tutorials, they turn up NO MATCHES for any terms with navigation bar in it.
I would really, really like to have a clean simple navigation bar on my website. Can anyone give me the URL where this tutorial is found? I would appreciate it SO much!

Hi Victoria

Doesn’t it do your head in?!! I am using Freeway 5.4.2 but hope this works in Version 4 (after spending literally hours and hours going round in circles with frustration). Go to top of screen - click Insert/Action Item/Navigation Bar. This should bring up a box for you to work in.

I gave up in defeat on drop-down menus but I like what I ended up with - perhaps you should check my site just in case this is not what you are wanting:

Next tip is to download the Freeway 5 Reference manual and put it on your desktop for constant use (it is large and I find it easy to navigate back and forward from my work). I had already printed off the “Using Freeway 5” 100+ page book and didn’t to do that again! Heaps of extra information in there - maybe there is a Reference Manual for version 4?

Best wishes … Jan

Hi Victoria,

You can find all of the Freeway 4 manuals and resources on the web
site in the support section here;
http://www.softpress.com/support/usermanuals/

and specifically the Freeway 4 Reference (in PDF form) here;
http://www.softpress.com/images/uploads/Freeway_Reference_Ed2_Apr_07.pdf

Page 15-43 contains the information you are looking for about the Menu
Bar action.
Freeway 5 introduced CSS Menus (http://www.softpress.com/tour/
cssmenus/) which offer greater control and are easier to maintain. If
you get a chance download and try the Freeway 5.5 30-day trial here; http://www.softpress.com/downloads/

Regards,
Tim.
