NavPopup Not Cutting It

Hi Guys,

I have my nav popup working for my search pages. But I have two problems:

  1. editing is a real pain (putting things in alphabetical order means I essentially have to re-type everything every time).

  2. the limitation of 50 (using nav popup 50) will not be enough down the road

Isn’t there a way to do a similar thing with a CSS Menu? I experimented with this in the beginning, and went with navpopup because I liked the end look of it the best. How can I create the same look I have now, but with the flexibility of CSS?

I hope what I’m wanting is possible!

Thanks again,
Doty

PS. Here’s an example of my search bar in all it’s current navpopup goodness:

I would split that list down a bit. Maybe into categories i.e. Sport, Outdoors etc. Then you can either stick with multiple navigation pop up or use css menus. I would opt for the css menus as they are easier to keep updated and can be styled.

Also, you have your images as PNG, they look a little pixelated. Are they set for ‘Adaptive’? if they are try ‘Millions’ as this gives a higher quality output.

Nathan,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

My client wants all the characters in one list. So, the question then becomes, how do I style the CSS so it looks like the navpopup? Here is my test page for the CSS Menu:

http://www.twoguysfourhands.com/shop/search.html

I want it to look and function like the navpopup list. One big help would be if it could be a drop down list that you click on instead of a hover function. I don’t see a way to set this in the inspector pane.

Regarding your observation of my images looking pixelated. I really struggle with FW and the output. PNG seemed the less of a couple of evils. But, yes, they are set to Adaptive. I will try the millions setting and see what that gives me. There are lots and lots of images. Are there any that in your opinion are worse than the others? Thanks for the tip!

Hmm. The CSS Menu’s can be styled anyway you want with a mix of the action options and graphics, but I don’t think it can be clicked instead of hover.

This is a simple one I did: http://www.austinwellsdesign.co.uk/clients/freewaymenu/

Why don’t you use Scripty Accordion or Transition Effects to have a slide down menu with the list. Then I think your list could be endless.

Nathan,

Do you know if you can add a vertical scroll bar? I think it is likely that the list might go off the screen for some people w/ small monitors and/or mobile devices. How did you create your list to look like a drop down menu (w/ the blue expansion triangles). I can’t figure out how to do this!

Thanks!

Yes you can a scrollbar - http://www.deltadesign.co/droplist.html

Mine looks like the drop down menu because I used a screengrab of it as the trigger image/rollover to reveal a Target Show/Hide layer with the list inside. Overflow set to scroll - just reduce the height of your HTML box to the height you want it to appear on the page.

No scroll bar the way I have done it.

I took a screen grab of your menu item for the ‘character search’ graphic.

One thing I would say is that if you have a list of over 50 items (and this list is growing) then I would find that quite annoying scrolling through. I would much prefer to see a broken down list into sections. Just my personal choice.
