Need Help- a newbie

Hi all- I am trying to find an alternative to FreeHand which has been killed off (between Adobe and Apple). I am going to have to move up in OS and need to locate software that will allow me to continue my drawing AND access aabout 20 years of older files. So it it seems the second goal is unattainable, but I am working on the first.
I downloaded a demo copy of "I"to decide if I feel comfortable with it–so far not as much as I would like. A lot of this is unlearning keystrokes I have lived with for many years and getting used to some functions not being there or in a form I don’t recognize. Here is the first thing that became itrritating FAST- I never thought of opening a new document and seeing a blank 8.5x11 sheet of white space as a template- but now i guess it is. I would like to create such a template- but two things- first and most obvious, I cannot find a way to do it-- thought I might find something under preferences (and could not locate a way to assign keyboard shortcuts- but… that is another matter) and then realized that while it says the page is 8/5/x 11 it is already trimmed and the margins are not equal- so if i design a cover illustration in the center of what I see, I am not in the center of the page—so-

  1. how do you create a template?

  2. how do you make the template actually BE 8/5 x 11 and not a truncated version?

Yes, I did locate the way to hide the grid- but that should be my preference and be missing on each new document. I wandered around and bumped into things but have not had the time to figure out where I am good and truly stuck. I intend to take a simple illustration from start (pencil sketch) to see how far I can get. this may take a few dayd- other computer issues (such as my “new” laser printer purchased for the 64 bit conversion is not supported by either Lion or Mountain Lion… and I have all those reserve ink cartridges…sigh.

    Help???

To see the entire page, got to the Layout menu and select “Show Page Margins”.

To make a template, just design what you want and save it as
“Template” Or some other name. When you use the template to start a
new document, open the “template” file and immediately “Save As”
using a different filename.

… then realized that while it says the page is 8/5/x 11 it is
already trimmed and the margins are not equal- so if i design a
cover illustration in the center of what I see, I am not in the
center of the page—so-

  1. how do you create a template?

  2. how do you make the template actually BE 8/5 x 11 and not a
    truncated version?

Intaglio opens and edits Freehand files that have been Exported as Generic EPS or Macintosh EPS. Layers don’t survive the translation.

Templates—as Jack said, but to access a template easily, drag it from the Finder to the Dock (to the right hand side of the separator).

Templates method 2: in the Finder, select the template file, select Get Info (Command-I) and click the Stationery Pad checkbox.

Templates method 3: in the Finder, duplicate the file and rename it.

Keyboard shortcuts: in System Preferences, go to Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Application Shortcuts and click the plus sign.
