The Sphinx search engine is nearly ready for the world. If you are interested in testing it, please contact me at waltd (at) wdstudio.com and I will tell you how to access it.
This will be such a major improvement over the existing search. In my own testing, searches are both incredibly quick and very accurate.
The ability to search is badly needed. Also needed is a method to get back to where I was after viewing a post. Right now back goes to the last page of posts requiring to leaf through each previous page to get to the page I was on. Very cumbersome. If I’m missing something please let me know.

The new search system was rolled out to great fanfare a couple of
weeks ago. I am personally taking the scarcity of complaints as a
ringing endorsement of its quality. Search is available on every page
in the site. It is context sensitive – if you are in a particular
forum, it will search that forum only. If you are on the home page,
it will search all forums, and if you are on a person page, it will
search all people.
Could you explain what you are doing when you end up back at the last
page of posts? Are you clicking on something? Can you try using the
Back button, and see where you end up?
I’m not sure what Bonnie means either but I find Firefox inserts a
Postdata warning every time I want to go back from a page found
through a search to the search results page which slows things up a
lot. Is there a way to avoid the Postdata warning or is this just a
Firefox thing (I can’t find a way to turn it off in the preferences)?
It certainly makes nipping backwards in a trawl in FreewayTalk a slow
process for me.

I can’t really work around that without breaking the back button
entirely. You might try Option or Command-clicking (can’t remember
which one does it) to open the link in a new tab, then close the tab
to go “back” without the warning.
